Crawl Space Insulation in Knoxville, TN
Warmer floors once the space below is dry
Most older homes have fiberglass batts stapled between the floor joists. In a damp crawl space those batts soak up moisture, get heavy, sag and drop to the dirt. What stays up holds water against the wood it was supposed to protect. The insulation work we do starts with taking out what has failed. Then, depending on how the space is set up, we fit new insulation to suit it. In a sealed and dehumidified crawl space we usually insulate the foundation walls. That pulls the crawl space inside the house's envelope, so the ducts and pipes sit in conditioned air. In a vented space, floor insulation still has a role, as long as moisture is under control.

Crawl Space Encapsulation
How crawl space insulation work around Knoxville
Insulation is the right call when the floors over the crawl space feel cold in winter, when you can see pink batts hanging or lying on the ground, or when heating bills crept up as the old material gave out. It also helps when ducts run through the space and lose heat or cool air on the way to your rooms. Knoxville gets cold snaps in winter and long humid summers, and a crawl space that is both dry and insulated handles both seasons better. Some older Knoxville houses on block piers have open spans with almost no insulation left at all, and those floors feel the difference quickly once it is done properly.
Insulation goes in last, after the space is dry. Putting it into a wet crawl space traps water against the framing and makes the problem worse. If there is standing water, condensation on ducts or soaked wood, we deal with that first or include it in the plan. We don't repair rotted joists, so any soft wood we find gets flagged for a carpenter. At the estimate we check the condition and type of the existing insulation, measure wall height and floor area, take moisture readings in the wood, and look at where the ducts run. The written price explains which approach fits your space and why.
Worth knowing: Insulation goes in after the moisture is handled. Insulating a wet crawl space traps the water against the wood and makes things worse.

Crawl Space Insulation questions
What homeowners ask about crawl space insulation
Half the insulation under our floor is lying on the dirt. Can you just staple it back up?
Batts that fell usually got wet, and they don't perform well once they've been soaked and compressed. We normally remove them and put in fresh insulation once the space is dry. Putting old wet batts back up can hold water against the joists.
Our kitchen floor is freezing every January. Is that a crawl space insulation problem?
It often is, especially if the insulation underneath has sagged or fallen away. Air leaks from vents or the access door can add to it. We'll check under that area at the estimate and tell you what we find.
I've heard you're supposed to insulate the walls of a sealed crawl space and leave the floor alone. Why is that?
In a sealed and dehumidified space, wall insulation keeps the whole area closer to the temperature of the house. That protects ducts and pipes and avoids cold spots. In a vented space the floor is usually what gets insulated.
There's a damp, musty smell and wet insulation down there. Which do we fix first?
Moisture comes first. If you insulate before drying the space, the new material ends up wet too. We'd look at drainage, the ground cover and humidity, then plan insulation once those are handled.
Will new insulation under the house lower my energy bills?
It can help, particularly if the old insulation has failed or the ducts run through the space. How much depends on the house, your heating and cooling setup and how leaky the space is. We won't promise a number, but we'll explain what's likely to improve.
My pipes froze once in a hard cold snap. Would insulating the crawl space help prevent that?
Insulating and sealing the space usually keeps it warmer, which helps protect pipes. Closing vents and sealing the access door matter too. We'll look at where your pipes run and point out any exposed spots.
I found some soft spots in the joists when I was down there. Will you replace them when you insulate?
We don't do joist or framing replacement, so soft or rotted wood goes to a carpenter. We'll note what we see and wait to insulate until the wood is sound. Drying the space helps keep the new framing in good shape.
Our house has rodent nests in the old insulation. Do you remove that?
We remove failed insulation as part of the job, and nests often come out with it. If there's still an active rodent problem, a pest company should handle that before or alongside our work. New insulation in a sealed space is less inviting to pests.
Is spray foam or rigid board better for crawl space walls?
Both can work, and the right choice depends on the wall type, the space and how it's being used. We'll recommend what fits after looking at your crawl space. The written estimate explains the material and why.
We're only planning to stay in the house a few years. Is crawl space insulation still worth doing?
If your floors are cold or the old insulation has fallen, fixing it can make the house more comfortable now and look better to a buyer's inspector. We'll give you an honest read at the free estimate. If it can wait, we'll say so.
